I am X perienced.....

More detailed info to follow - here are a couple of pictures that should give you a slight indication of how the festival was.

Yes indeed, that was a musical Mount Rushmore.

great pics, Mando. Sounds / looks like you had a great time . . . . I'm envious as hell!! VIP package sounds like it was well worth it.

See any bands you were unfamiliar with that are worth mentioning?

Did you catch the Railroad Earth show? If so how was it? I'm on a big RRE kick as of late & listening to them almost every day here on archive.

I'm going to mark this fest down in my calender--DEFINITELY plan on making it up there next year!

DD -

RRE killed their set this year. They have long been FloydFest favorites and they really put on a great show. I saw 4 or 5 mic stands so I'm hoping someone hangs the set up soon. I check every day and will let all of you know.

As far as new bands - Big Something put on a great late night set on the Global Village Stage. They are on IA and pulled a pretty big crowd of about 2000 considering they started at 1AM and played until around 3AM.

I am hoping that someone recorded their FFX sets, but try this out for a little sample.

Oh my...I had no idea Floydfest was this epic. And I can't believe some of the people you got to meet...living legends. $400 seems totally worth it! Great pics!!

Not really. I talked with Chris Hodges, the organizer. The gate has been 8000 for the past 4 years. What they did do differently this year is no single day sales until June 1st. They wanted an up front committment for all 4 days. If you bought a 4 day pass the day tix went on sale they were $90. The VIP adult pair was $730, individual VIP was $400 from day one. The prices went up as time went on as an incentive to commit. Once they had the presale out of the way they went after the big acts and had an idea of what the single day sales could be knowing that most would be going home that night. The gate on Friday and Saturday was 14000 - of which more than half left each night. Chris guesstimated they had about 6000 people on site between VIPS, 4 day campers and staff/volunteers.

He also said they have no intention of raising the gate next year. Music to my ears. I will also have my VIP ticket for FF XI the day they go on sale in November.

I remember the emails saying they were limiting sales and I thought it was number of tickets. Maybe it was the number of on site parking passes. And if I remember correctly, those on-site parking passes were more expensive than in previous years. I didn't save the emails, as I knew I could not make it this year. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't ragging Floydfest. I love Floyd, though I am not sure I will ever do 4 days again. But with the blow out they scheduled this year, the price was very fair.

No, I understand you weren't cracking on FF. They do a staggered price scheme. Prices go up 1 Jan, 1 April, 1 June etc., to try and force an early committment.

You may have seen a price quote for later on. If you bought a 4 day pass the day they went on sale in November it was $95. If you waited until after 1 April it was $135.

I also heard they had 800 VIP tix this year and are going to keep it at that level.

I'm not worried, I'm buying the Adult VIP pair again the day they go on sale. $730 for the pair but you have to pull the trigger quick. All the Early Bird Adult Pair VIPS sold out within 2 weeks. Then the price went to $800/pair. Either way, still a good deal.

I'll be there again next year, but I have to admit, it took about 4 days to recover. 4 nights in a row with about 3-4 hours of sleep catches up with you sooner and sooner as the years go on.

At least I finally wised up and brought my self levelling camp cot. So the 4 hours of sleep I did get were good.

Maybe more kombuchi next year????

That's the thing about camping on-site at music festivals--the older I get the more I want my creature-comforts (comfortable bed, hot showers, a quiet place to sleep, etc.).

I def. intend to go next year, but man, I need more than 3-4 hours a night, especially when my waking hours primarily revolve around drinking, dancing, etc.!

Mando: are there any quiet(er) areas within the festival grounds where one can camp so that (with the help of self-leveling cots, earplugs, and doctor-prescribed pharmaceuticals) one might be able to sleep in till 10AM or so?? Or is there some kind of off-site camping area within walking distance to the festival grounds?

I saw acoustic Hot Tuna last week. Had high expectations but have to say I wasn't overly impressed. Admittedly I'm in no way qualified to "judge", just know what I like . . .

And better....

In the attached picture with Tony all alone, he was telling us about how many years ago when he was about 14 years old he was watching Clarence White play a beat up Martin D-28. He asked Clarence if he could play the guitar and he let him. Then in that signature, incomparable gravelly voice, Tony said that the guitar he had in his hands right now was THAT guitar. The crowd went nuts. Then he told us he was going to play "I Am A Pilgrim" in tribute to Clarence White. He told us it made him cry every time he heard it. The crowd understandably went ape shit.

The last pic is with Josh Williams - 2010 IBMA Guitar Player of the Year. Tony told us how proud he was when Josh won his first in 2008 - Tony ran up to him and gave him a big hug and told him how well deserved it was. Then when Josh won again in 2009 he walked up and shook his hand. When he won again in 2010 Tony asked him to play mandolin in the Tony Rice Unit.

Superb.

This is kicking my ass.

If these post, the Dawg and Rowan pic is one of my favorites from the festival. These two giants sitting and watching Del McCoury play gave me goosebumps. The look on their faces as they sat their with their instruments was like "Ooooo, pick me, pick me!!" And of course, Del did and the set just ratcheted up to another level.

Wait till I tell you about Sam Bush sitting in with Robert Randolph and the Family Band........

A couple of years back I saw Rowan and Rice in a tiny opera house in Clayton, NY. Row L if memory serves. Twas almost a religious experience. I just can't even imagine how charged up one could get witnessing that assemblage of bluegrass giants at the same time. Many thanks for the pics!!

BUT, what's up with the thrift store hat? I'll try to send you one in crimson before next year.

I went with the VIP package this year. Well worth the $400 in my opinion. VIP got us early entry Wednesday at noon - the fest officially starts at 4:00PM on Thursday. We did have three sound check party passes Wed night to see Big Daddy Love, Bryan Elijah Smith and the Wild Hearts and The Mantras. Throughout the fest, we had several really good sets in the VIP tent: Jackass Flats, Blood Roots Barter, New Monsoon acoustic, DJ Williams Projekt, Big Something, Dirk Powell, and others.

Also included:

- Two meals a day. We ate in the VIP/Artist tent and had an opportunity to mingle with the performers. On Friday I sat with Jack Casady, Barry Mitterhoff and Sam Cutler and just listened. (Sam is still wasted from the '60s). The food was really good. In years past I had always lugged in cooking gear and a big cooler and prepared my own meals and bartered a big plate of scrambled eggs and bacon or a brat or burger for beer tickets with the newbie hippies. Not having to pack all that stuff in was worth it. The vendor food was pretty good too - but one can only eat certified naturally grown, organic, gluten free, hermetically sealed black bean burritos, veggie wraps or falafels for so long. I did buy funnel cakes because fried dough and powdered sugar is a food group. I did barter 10 of my ghost peppers for 10 peaches and 10 apples at the on site farmer's market produce stand.
- Backstage access on the two stages with back stages - all the other stages are pretty much open and you can walk right up anyway.
- Side stage seating on the Main Stage (this alone made it worth it)
- Private camping area - on flat ground. Much improved over the other camping areas.
- Private showers
- And the almighty bottomless beer cup. Foothills Brewery, Starr Hill, Magic Hat, Breckenridge Brewery, Chateau Morrisette Vineyard and Woodchuck Cider were the standout vendors. I am still reconstructing the different brews I tried out. Some were better than others. There was also a real cute hippie chick dispensing kombuchi - I have no idea what it is/was other than some concotion of mushroom mold and black tea and is alledgedly good for you. Whatever, she was cute and it tasted pretty good.....

Thanks for sharing your wonderful pix. Sounds like it lived up to the hype, though I am not surprised. It seems Floyd is no longer that little under the radar festy in the Va mountains. But with the 10th anniversary lineup, I knew that already. You make the VIP package sound like quite a bargain.

Mando - I was browsing some of my old links to download music and found a site I have gotten some bluegrass shows from. Some shows have expired, others are still up on mediafire. They are usually mp3, so good for your iPod, but not acceptable for trading.
